Outdoor Living with a Backyard Oasis in Canton, GA

Landscape Design to Create a Beautiful Backyard Sanctuary!

This client had a beautiful lot with a new pool that was situated high on a hilltop behind the home's porch and patio. The goal for this project was to create a design that integrated all the different landscape elements together into a backyard sanctuary with a variety of living spaces, joined to one another with a graceful flow of circulation.

A before look at the backyard before we worked on it. Not very nice. A look at the slope leading up to the pool. Very bare.

A Retaining Wall Connected by Stone Steps to the Pool

The first challenge was to tame the steep slope at the end of the pool. This was done by constructing a series of terraced decorative block retaining walls connected by stone steps and flagstone landings. The terrace levels also provided more planting bed space for the owner to plant one of his beautiful Japanese maple trees as a focal point and to fill in around the pool with flowering shrubs and perennials.

Now the pool is a refreshing destination spot, and it offers great views and easy access down to the lawn and patio below.

Weathered garden boulders were used throughout to make natural transitions in topography and to fit with the hillside setting.

Construction underway on the retaining wall. Construction in progress on the paver steps that lead up to the pool.

We Even Expanded the Pool Deck and Added a Paver Patio

A beautiful looking wood lattice covering up the pool equipment. The existing pool deck area was small; the pool equipment was front and center. A wood square lattice enclosure with a gate was built to screen it from view. The pool deck was expanded to include a circular paver patio with a stacked stone fire pit and seat wall which made the upper pool terrace a yearlong outdoor living area. More flagstone paving was added along the side to create space for a garden swing.

We Then Needed a Flagstone Walkway to Connect Everything

At the opposite end of the pool, a new flagstone walkway was constructed to connect the pool area to a garden of raised beds, a pergola and a play structure.

How Could We Forget About Landscape Lighting?

To complete the transformation, landscape lighting was installed to create magical ambience in the garden at night. It highlights the trees and garden sculptures and makes the steps safe to navigate.

Now family and friends can enjoy a variety of garden spaces and activities, each outdoor living area linked to another like a string of pearls!
