New sod is one of the quickest ways to establish a lawn, replace grass that has thinned or failed, or restore areas disturbed during landscaping and other work around the property. The sod itself is only part of the job. Good soil contact, proper grading, and careful watering during the first few weeks all have a big effect on how well the new lawn takes root.

Preparing the Lawn Before Sod Is Installed

New sod should not simply be laid over a problem area and expected to correct whatever is underneath it. Failed turf, weeds, debris, uneven ground, and poor soil conditions may need to be addressed first so the new roots can make good contact with the soil.

The grade also matters. If water already collects in low spots or moves toward the house, laying sod over the area will not solve the underlying problem. Installing and Establishing the New Lawn

Fresh sod should be laid closely and evenly, with careful attention around planting beds, walkways, driveways, and other landscape features. Good contact between the sod and the prepared soil below helps the roots establish instead of drying out at the surface.

Once installation is complete, the focus shifts to moisture. New sod cannot yet reach very far into the soil for water, so the first few weeks are different from caring for an established lawn. At the same time, constantly saturated ground can also cause problems. The goal is moist soil around the developing roots, not standing water.

How to Care for New Sod

If The Dreamscapes installed your new sod, use the following as a general guide while the lawn becomes established. Every yard is different, and even different areas of the same lawn can dry at different rates. Full sun, shade, slope, soil, weather, and irrigation coverage all affect how often an area needs water.

Check several sections of the lawn regularly during the first month. Push your finger or a screwdriver into the soil below the sod to check for moisture instead of relying only on the irrigation schedule.

Watering During the First Month

• 1st Week: Keep the sod and the soil immediately below it consistently moist while the roots begin to establish. Check the lawn daily, paying particular attention to sunny areas and edges that may dry faster.
• 2nd Week: Begin allowing slightly more time between watering as the sod starts rooting into the soil. Continue checking moisture before watering again.
• 3rd Week: As rooting improves, watering can become less frequent and deeper. Check several areas of the lawn because shaded and sunny sections may still need different amounts of water.
• 4th Week: Begin moving toward a normal lawn watering schedule. About one inch of water per week, including rainfall, is a useful general reference once the lawn is established, but weather and soil conditions should always be taken into account.

Do not assume that more water is always better. If the soil is already wet, give it time before watering again. During hot or dry weather, check the lawn more frequently and watch for areas that are drying faster than the rest.

When Can You Mow New Sod?

Wait until the sod has begun rooting into the soil before the first mowing. Gently pull upward on the grass in several areas. If the sod lifts easily, it needs more time. If it feels anchored to the soil, it is beginning to establish.

For the first cut, use a higher mower setting and sharp blades, and avoid removing too much grass at once. After the new lawn is established, mowing height, blade condition, and mowing frequency all affect turf health. Weeds, Brown Patch and Other Early Problems

It is not unusual to see an occasional weed appear between pieces of newly installed sod. These can be hand pulled while the lawn is establishing. Avoid applying a weed treatment too early, and always check the product label before using any herbicide on new sod.

Fescue lawns should also be watched for brown patch, particularly during warm, humid weather. If the lawn develops spreading brown areas, remains unusually wet, or does not appear to be rooting evenly, it is better to determine what is causing the problem rather than simply adding more water.

Keeping Your New Lawn Healthy

The first few weeks are about getting the sod rooted. After that, watering can gradually return to a normal schedule and the lawn can move into regular mowing and turf maintenance.
